ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond County Health Department on Wednesday afternoon announced the county’s second COVID-related death of the day.
Like the previous death, local health officials say the most recent one occurred in a local healthcare facility. However, the facility is not named and it is not known if both deaths happened at the same place.
Of the county’s 65 deaths, 15 have occurred at a healthcare facility. The majority, 46, have happened at a hospital and four have occurred outside of a health setting.
This makes the fourth death in two days and 13th for the month of January. There were 15 reported in October and 13 in December.
The race and gender breakdown is as follows: 12 African American females, eight African American males, one “other race” female, one “other race,” male, one Hispanic female, two American Indian males, 20 Caucasian females and 18 Caucasian males.
All patients have been between the ages of 31 and 95: 20 have been 80 or older; 20 have been in their 70s; 17 in their 60s; six in their 50s; and one who was 31.
Judging from previous reports, the latest death was that of an African American woman in her 70s.
There have been 8,200 COVID-related deaths across the state as of Jan. 20, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. Sixty-one of those have been reported within the past 24 hours.
According to Johns Hopkins University, the country has seen 403,952 and there have been 2,067,143 globally. The number of nationwide deaths increased by more than 2,000 since 10 a.m. Wednesday.
