ROCKINGHAM — Five families are displaced following a late-night fire at a local apartment complex.

According to the Rockingham Fire Department, crews responded to a call at Crown Pointe Apartments on Cauthen Drive, off of Long Drive, just after 12:30 a.m. Friday.

The first crew on scene reported heavy smoke and fire showing from the second story of Building 4, according to an RFD social media post.

Crews went inside to attack the blaze and “reported heavy fire in the common attic space” between all five apartments.

Flames worked their way across the roof from the left toward the right.

Chief Harold Isler climbed into the bucket of the ladder truck to attack the blaze from the air and was able to keep damage to the far left edge of the building to a minimum.

Isler said one occupant injured herself during the evacuation and EMS was called.

Crews were on the scene until 6:30 a.m.

The cause of the fire is currently undetermined and still under investigation.

Fire officials say the American Red Cross out of Fayetteville was called in to help the families, which include seven adults and 16 children.
