HOFFMAN — Several outbuildings and vehicles were destroyed Sunday afternoon in a fire responded to my multiple departments in Richmond and Moore counties.
The call for the fire on the corner of Bryant and Bowen streets — not far from the Hoffman Fire Department — came in around 12:15 p.m., according to Chief Frank McKay.
Black smoke billowed above the trees and could be seen for several miles.
The chief said the property owner runs a business transporting people back and forth from nursing homes to the hospital and used the outbuildings to store lubricants and other materials used to maintain the vehicles.
During the blaze, McKay said multiple LP gas tanks exploded and some of the vinyl siding on a mobile home melted from the heat.
“It was generally a mess,” said McKay, who said the fire was reminiscent of a junk yard blaze several years ago.
None of the transport vehicles were among those damaged in the fire, McKay said, adding that the fire was contained to that property.
Fire departments from Derby, Northside and Ellerbe in Richmond County, as well as those from West End and Pinebluff in Moore county responded to help extinguish the blaze.
McKay said the scene was cleared at 4:12 p.m.
No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is still unknown.
