ROCKINGHAM — Three brush fires burned a total of seven acres across Richmond County over the weekend, according to the N.C. Forest Service.

While specific locations weren’t given, rangers said two of them were in the Hamlet area on Sunday, both about an acre in size. One was in the morning, the other was in the afternoon.

Crews were able to protect eight homes and four other structures from burning, officials said.

There were a total of 10 fires across the eight-county district, which also includes Anson, Chatham, Lee, Moore, Montgomery, Scotland and Stanly counties.

The Forest Service warns that there will be more opportunity for wildfires this week because of the dry conditions and use of fireworks for Independence Day celebrations.

The Forest Service previously issued a press release warning of the dangers associated with fireworks. Click here to read it.

The fire risk threat was elevated from Level 2 to Level 3 on Monday.

Officials at the local Forest Service office say there hasn’t been any significant rainfall (more than 1/4 of an inch) recorded at the office’s rain gauge since June 13 (0.28 inches) and the last day with more than a half-inch of precipitation was June 11 (0.86 inches).

The National Weather Service is calling for only a 20-40 percent chance of showers or storms throughout the week, with temperatures in the upper 90s and heat indices over 100. The high for Wednesday is expected to hit 100 degrees, not including the heat index.
