Active COVID cases in Richmond County top 500

ROCKINGHAM — Richmond County has now topped 3,100 coronavirus cases in the past nine months.

Tuesday’s update from the Health Department showed 27 new cases, bringing the overall total to 3,104.

The number of active cases also jumped to a record high of 502 after dropping to 236 on Dec. 31.

So far, there have been 448 cases of the coronavirus this month. There were just over 400 for both October and November and more than 800 in December.

Statewide daily cases rose slightly from the previous day to 6,851, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. The state had another record-breaking day on Saturday, topping 11,000.

After a slight downward trend, COVID-related hospitalizations across North Carolina also increased slightly on Monday (hospital numbers are a day behind) to 3,940 — the second-highest behind the Jan. 6 peak of 3,964.

The Health Department reports 23 county residents are in a hospital due to COVID-19.

According to FirstHealth, 96 of its 355 (27%) are COVID-positive. Scotland Memorial Hospital had not released an update as of this report.

There have been 7,638 statewide COVID-related deaths, including 54 in Richmond County.

FirstHealth and the Health Department began administering vaccines to those 75 years old and older on Monday.

Free COVID-19 testing will continue throughout the month in the parking lot behind the Health Department. Testing will run from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, except when closed for lunch from noon-12:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Of all the tests performed on county residents, 24,239 have returned a negative result and the Health Department estimates that 2,548 have recovered.
