ELLERBE — A strong storm that passed through Richmond County this afternoon downed trees and left some residents without power.

Christina Robinson posted photos to Facebook of trees down along Page Street. One photo appeared to show a tree that fell on a home.

Crews are still working to clear the debris.

Richmond County Emergency Service Director Donna Wright said the only damage she was aware of was that in Ellerbe.

At 5 p.m., Pee Dee Electric reported more than 1300 hundred of its customers were without power, including 73 in Richmond County and 207 in Union County. However, most of the outages (1,058) are in Anson County.

Duke Energy’s outage map for North Carolina would not load.

The National Weather Service in Raleigh issued a tornado watch late Friday morning which was originally set to expire at 5 p.m. However, that watch was extended until 8 p.m.

The watch includes 20 counties in central North Carolina. Most of the state, as well as many counties in South Carolina are also under a tornado watch.

Several areas, including Wayne and Halifax counties, were upgraded to tornado warnings during the afternoon storms.

Just after 3:30, the weather service issued a severe thunderstorm warning that expired at 4:15.

More storms are expected through 10 p.m. and could produce damaging straight-line winds, large hail, torrential downpours, and a few tornadoes.
