American Red Cross assisting families displaced by flooding

CHARLOTTE—The Red Cross is providing a safe place to stay and meals for individuals impacted by flooding and severe storms as the remnants of Tropical Storm Fred passed through our region on Tuesday.

Since Tuesday, rains have continued to impact the area. Emergency officials have confirmed that two people have died from flooding and seven people are still missing. Search and rescue missions continue across the area. We are working with our emergency management partners to provide support in communities that have been impacted by flooding and severe weather.

The Red Cross has been serving meals and snacks at Crestview Baptist Church and Tuscola High School. The shelter at Tuscola High School in Haywood County remains open today for families in need of a place to stay.

We will be delivering supplies to all the affected areas over the next few days as roads become passable and safe. Today, we are working with Buncombe Emergency Management to distribute emergency supplies.  We are coordinating with Transylvania, Haywood, Yancy and Mitchell counties as well.
