EAST ROCKINGHAM — Fire crews responded to yet another call at a vacant home Monday night.

The East Rockingham Fire Department was dispatched to 241 School Street, near Place of Grace, around 9:15 p.m.

Chief Bill Bayless said it appears the fire started in the hallway of the small vacant home, which sustained mostly smoke damage.

Cordova Fire and Rescue also responded as mutual aid.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office will be investigating, Bayless said.

This is at least the third suspicious fire at a vacant home this month.

During the first weekend in September, ERFD responded to fires on Aleo First and Aleo Second avenues.

Both homes had already been partially burned and there was no utility to service to either of them, according to Bayless. He also said the department has responded to the home on Aleo Second Avenue three times within the past year.

The sheriff’s office is also investigating those fires.
