ELLERBE — Crews responded to a fire the morning of Feb. 5 at a mobile home, where the body of an unknown man was found.
That’s where the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office took over from the Ellerbe Fire Department.
The body was sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Raleigh for identification, according to Chief Deputy Jay Childers.

Childers said on Feb. 9 that the sheriff’s office, Richmond County Fire Marshal, the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were working together on the case to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
However, he added, “No foul play is expected.”
As of Feb. 15, there were no updates in the case.
