Bond reduced in meth possession case

ROCKINGHAM — A man who already has pending charges was allegedly caught with meth and pills.

Zachary Wayne Thornton, 25, of Beaver Dam Church Road, was arrested without a warrant Sunday, accused of having an unspecified amount of meth, a pipe and 1 ½ buprenorphine pills, according to a magistrate’s order.

He is charged with one felony count of possession of methamphetamine and one misdemeanor count each of simple possession of a Schedule III controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was initially booked into the Richmond County Jail under a $10,000 secured bond, which was reduced to $1,000 on Wednesday, records show. Thornton remained in jail Wednesday evening and is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 20.

The motion for bond reduction states that Thornton is also facing pending charges of misdemeanor larceny and making a harassing phone call.

Online court records show a Feb. 7 court date for the larceny charge, but no date for the other.

Jail records show Thornton also has two charges of failing to appear in court on a misdemeanor.

Thornton has no prior convictions in the state, according to records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
