Cavco opens production facility at former VBC site in Richmond County Industrial Park

HAMLET — A new manufacturing company has moved into Richmond County, but it didn’t have to start from scratch.

Cavco Industries announced on Tuesday that it has opened a facility in Hamlet, seven months after acquiring the property from Volumetric Building Companies.

VBC Manufacturing had been operating at the 184,000 square foot former Ritz-Craft site in the Richmond County Industrial Park since June 2019 to produce multi-family and commercial structures.

According to a press release, VBC moved its manufacturing to the northeast.

Cavco, based in Phoenix, Arizona, “will produce homes built under the standards of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development,” according to the release.

The Hamlet facility will operate as Cavco North Carolina.

“At Cavco we are intensely driven to provide solutions to the pressing need for affordable homes,” said Bill Boor, president and chief executive officer of Cavco. “The addition of the Hamlet facility to our growing network of 27 plants across the country is a step forward on that path.”

In addition to those production plants, Cavco also has 48 distribution points through the U.S. and Canada and 45 retail stores, according to the release.

County Manager Bryan Land says he and Economic Developer Martie Butler were “assured” by officials from both Cavco and VBC that jobs would be offered to existing employees.

Cavco officials added that more jobs are planned as homebuilding production expands.

Land said that while the outside may appear unchanged, the Cavco team “been working tirelessly the last few months” transitioning team members, upfitting the facility with new equipment and adding space.

“This has been a great opportunity to quickly bring new capacity online with an in-place and capable workforce, Boor said. “From the beginning, it was a primary objective for both VBC and Cavco that we maintain continuous employment for the people at the facility; and through careful planning and coordination, we have been able to do so. We’re very excited about the important role Hamlet will play in Cavco’s future for many years to come.”

Members of the Richmond County Board of Commissioners welcome Cavco to the area.

“We look forward to becoming an integral part of their future as they continue to grow,” said Chairman Jeff Smart, thanking the two companies for including the county in the transition process.

“We enjoyed a strong partnership with VBC Hamlet and I’m glad to see that relationship transitioning smoothly with Cavco,” added Commissioner Andy Grooms.

According to the press release, Cavco is the third-largest builder of manufactured homes.
