HAMLET — Human remains were the result of the Hamlet Police Department being taped off Tuesday afternoon.

According to Chief Dennis Brown, an unnamed resident had been given permission to get excess sand from work that was being done at Mary Love Cemetery.

The man took the sand home where he reportedly discovered a human skull and vertebrae.

Brown said the man brought the remains to the department and police, in turn, contacted the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation to assist.

Following an investigation, Brown said it appears the remains came from the Potter burial site and were likely those of someone who died during the Spanish Flu epidemic about a century ago.

Brown said the remains will be reburied by Harrington Funeral Home and Crematory.
