When kids fail to respond to treatment for mental health challenges, it may be because they’re being treated for the wrong thing. Getting the right diagnosis for emotional and behavioral problems can be tricky, and therapy or medication can miss the mark if we don’t understand what’s going on with the child.
This week on childmind.org we take a look at some of the most common mistakes in diagnosing children. Errors are especially likely when rushed clinicians jump to conclusions without carefully considering a range of causes, or a child’s distress doesn’t fit stereotypes of familiar disorders. Being on alert for potential misunderstanding and knowing what to expect in a good diagnostic evaluation can help parents ensure that children get the effective treatment they need.
