ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond County Amateur Radio Club recently gave a $200 donation to help the county’s foster children.
Club members Max Kearns and Butch Parris presented the check to Foster Care Supervisor Theressa Smith on Friday.
This is the third year that the club has donated to the Division of Social Services for foster children of Richmond County.
There are currently 56 children in foster care, according to Smith.
She said DSS is hosting a Christmas party — with food and Santa — for the foster kids at The Hive.
The Richmond County Amateur Radio Club was founded in 1977, according to Parris, but was restarted around eight to 10 years ago. The club is 35 members strong, all of whom are licensed amateur radio operators.
The club maintains a volunteer examiners group that administer licensure exams four times a year.
Amateur radio consists of 29 bands of radio frequencies, according to the FCC website, which are set aside for licensed amateur radio operators.
