CORDOVA — One local volunteer fire department will be making a few upgrades thanks to Pee Dee Electric.

Cordova Fire and Rescue recently received a $7,500 grant through Pee Dee Electric’s Care to Share program.

The electric cooperative posted the quarterly grant recipients on its Facebook page Dec. 28. The other two recipients were Lanes Creek Volunteer Fire Department and the Turning Point domestic violence shelter, both in Union County.

Chief Jeremy Chance said the department will use the funds to replace older emergency lights on its vehicles with brighter LED lights.

“These grant programs are great for the departments in this county,” Chance told the RO on Jan. 5. “Without these grants, these rural departments would struggle due to the price of fire and rescue equipment.”

Funding for the Care to Share program comes from members of the electric cooperative rounding up their power bills to the next dollar amount, according to Taylor Demby, manager of marketing and communications for PDE.

Seven Richmond County teachers were also recently awarded Bright Ideas grants from Pee Dee Electric for six projects. Click here to read that story.
