COVID numbers spike across state as new month begins

ROCKINGHAM — Richmond County started the month of October with more than a dozen new cases of COVID-19.

The Health Department on Thursday reported 14 new cases, bringing the county’s overall total up to 1,062.

Of the 118 active cases, 111 are under home isolation and seven are hospitalized.

The Health Department also reports that 10,012 of those tested have received a negative result.

September saw the most cases in the county (358) for one month: 49 the first week; 106; the second week; 91 the third week; 79 the fourth week; and 33 this week.

In September, the county also reported its highest one-day total (36 on Sept. 21), which included 19 cases at Morrison Correctional Institution in Hoffman, and six COVID-related deaths.

Also on Thursday, the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services reported the highest one-day total of cases (2,277) since July 30 (2,411).

The state has seen a total of 212,909 cases: 207,789 molecular positive cases, which represent confirmed cases; and 5,120 antigen cases, which represent “probable” cases based on CDC classification guidelines.

According to the Health Department 926 Richmond County patients have recovered. DHHS estimates there have been at least 184,422 statewide. That report is updated each Monday.

The number of local cases per age group are as follows:

  • 0-18 – 142
  • 19-30 – 179
  • 31-40 – 138
  • 41-50 – 187
  • 50-64 – 223
  • 65-older – 189

The number of cases per ZIP code are as follows:

  • Rockingham – 571 (39 active)
  • Hamlet – 290 (33 active)
  • Ellerbe – 111 (11 active)
  • Hoffman – 72 (33 active)
  • Mount Gilead – 10 (0 active)
  • Marston – 8 (2 active)

(*Note: The Richmond County Health Department now lists the number of active cases per ZIP Code instead of the number of recoveries.)

DHHS reports that more than half of the state’s 100 counties that have now experienced more than 1,000 total cases: Alamance, Brunswick, Burke, Buncombe, Cabarrus, Caldwell, Catawba, Craven, Franklin, Chatham, Cleveland, Columbus, Cumberland, Davidson, Duplin, Durham, Edgecombe, Forsyth, Gaston, Granville, Guilford, Halifax, Harnett, Henderson, Hoke, Iredell, Johnston, Lee, Lenoir, Lincoln, McDowell, Mecklenburg, Montgomery, Moore, Nash, New Hanover, Onlsow, Orange, Pitt, Randolph, Richmond, Rowan, Robeson, Rockingham, Rutherford, Sampson, Scotland, Stanly, Surry, Union, Vance, Wake, Wayne, Wilkes and Wilson.

Beaufort, Pender and Watauga counties both have had more than 900 cases.

Madison County finally broke 100 total cases and now has 112, followed by Tyrrell and Camden, both with 116.

Compared to other counties with a population between 43,000 and 48,000, Richmond falls close to the top. Vance County has had 1072 cases. The other four counties in the same population bracket have lesser totals: Beaufort (985); Jackson (670); McDowell (1,034); and Stokes (468).

The total numbers (including recoveries) for surrounding counties are as follows:

  • Mecklenburg -29,132 (the only other county to top 10,000 is Wake with 17,878)
  • Union – 4,943
  • Stanly – 2,033
  • Montgomery – 1,0253
  • Anson – 630
  • Moore – 1,715 (160 active)
  • Hoke – 1,243
  • Scotland – 1,257
  • Robeson – 4,677

All numbers are from DHHS except Moore, which are from the local health department, as there has been a discrepancy with the state. 

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control is reporting 1,249 total cases in Chesterfield County and 932 in Marlboro County.
