ROCKINGHAM – The local General Henry William Harrington DAR Chapter plans to educate during Constitution Week (September 17-23) and then participate in Veterans’ Day activities in November.

Patriotism, presentation and education are the cornerstones of the DAR organization.  In the vein of education, the Richmond County DAR chapter will be encouraging the public to educate themselves about what our Constitution really says by reading it so we can all be better informed and responsible citizens.

The week of September 17-23 is Constitution Week, the 231st anniversary of the signing of this document.  Through radio spots and printed publications, the DAR hopes to raise awareness of – and interest in – our country’s Constitution.  According to printed material from the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, the goal of establishing the Constitution Week is to “teach the public the historical events surrounding the establishment of the Constitution and the men who framed the document.”

Salient facts regarding the Constitution are not only important, but also interesting  The U.S. Constitution is the oldest constitution still in active use in the world today.  It is the foundation document of our republic and protects the individual liberties of all citizens through written law.  These and other basic Constitution-related points are important for each citizen of the United States to know and understand.

The “Bells Across America” effort is another way to highlight the Constitution during the week.  At 4:00 p.m. on the 17th all churches who can participate are asked to ring their bells in commemoration of the time the Constitution was signed.

On November 10, the local DAR chapter will present a wreath at Veterans’ Park in Rockingham at 11:00 a.m. and then participate in the Veterans’ Day parade at 3:00 p.m.

The General Henry William Harrison Chapter meets the first Wednesday of each month at 12:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Rockingham.  The chapter regent is Mary Bowles.  Anyone interested in becoming a member is encouraged to contact her at (910) 652-5770 for more information.
