DOBBINS HEIGHTS — Another municipal tree was lit in front of Town Hall on Tuesday.

Mayor Pro Tem and Town Clerk Tyre Holloway welcomed those who came out to the annual Dobbins Heights tree-lighting ceremony.

The small crowd included several Dobbins Heights residents, councilwomen Angeline David and Revonna Magee; Mayor-elect Amy Guinn, Councilman Maurice Stuart and Director of Community Engagement Mechelle Preslar from neighboring Hamlet; and Richmond County Chamber of Commerce President Kristi King.

“This is a time for us to be joyous, thankful and reflective,” Holloway said following a brief prayer from David. “We’ve got to acknowledge the things that are going on in the world, and out of all the things, we’re still here together.

“That’s huge, because there (are) a lot of families that are not going to be able to be together this holiday season,” Holloway continued. “And I want you to be mindful of them; please, say a prayer for them because nobody wants to be alone this time of the year. It’s too joyous of an occasion to be alone.”

Holloway encouraged those in the crowd to reach out to those who may be alone: “Just a friendly ‘hello;” you might make their day.”

Following a countdown from 10, the tree was lit and refreshments were served inside Town Hall.

Dobbins Heights will host its annual free sleigh rides starting at 1 p.m. Dec. 22 at Town Park.

Hamlet will host its third annual Christmas Parade of Lights starting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, with the route taking more than 60 floats down Main, Rice, Charlotte and Raleigh streets, ending on Hamlet Avenue.
