ROCKINGHAM — What appears to have started as a woods fire left a camper trailer in ashes Wednesday afternoon.

The East Rockingham and Cordova fire departments responded to a call shortly after 3 p.m. on Outside Lane, near the intersection of Loch Haven and Battley Dairy roads.

ERFD Chief Bill Bayless said it appears that someone was cutting trees behind a fenced in home and was burning off underbrush and just left it burning.

There was no one at the home when crews arrived to extinguish the fire, which was near a dog pen, according to Bayless.

Aside from a small patch of woods and the 30-foot trailer burning, the fire also melted some vinyl siding on the home.
