ELLERBE – Contrary to contemporary rumor, the Kemp Sugg Memorial Public Library in Ellerbe has not yet changed its location.

And it is not necessarily a given that it will move, but all signs are pointing in that direction.

“We just don’t know exactly what will happen at this point,” says Ashley Scott of the library staff.  “We may be moving to the old Fidelity Bank building on Main Street, but nothing definite has been decided that I know of.”

The discussion for such a move is seemingly progressing, however.

“We aren’t sure exactly when, but we will probably move it (library) to the old Fidelity Building within the next six months,” stated Mayor Lee Berry.

The old Fidelity Bank in Ellerbe could serve as the Kemp Sugg Memorial Library’s new home.

The library move is not without some degree of difficulty and controversy, minor as it may be.  The building in which the library is currently housed is owned by the town and also provides space for the Rankin Museum of American Heritage.

“We may just donate the building to the Rankin Museum,” said Berry.

Such a move would enhance the existent space of the museum and would seem to be a logical consideration.

However, there has been some discussion regarding pending tax responsibilities and current maintenance issues as potential hindrances to any such transaction, at least to some extent.

“Everything has to be right before we can do anything, but everyone is in agreement as to what we want to do in general,” said Berry.

And what is wanted is to move the library to the vacant Fidelity Bank building on Main Street, thereby allowing the Rankin Museum to expand its offices, exhibits and displays into the current library space.

The move could potentially benefit Ellerbe residents multiple ways, and that fact is readily recognized by all parties involved in the decision-making process, but a final decision is yet to be made.
