Father Pleads for Son’s Surrender in Hamlet Soup Kitchen Shooting

Edward Sload, 22, is accused of shooting another man outside the Richmond County Soup Kitchen on Wednesday.

HAMLET— The father of a man wanted in connection to a midday shooting on Wednesday is pleading for his son to turn himself in.

Edward Sloan Sr. said he just found out Thursday that police were looking for his son, also Edward Sloan, who is accused of shooting another man outside the Richmond County Soup Kitchen just after 12:30 Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators did not release the suspect’s name until Thursday morning.

Surrendering, he said, calling from the Hamlet Police Department, “would be the best thing and the only thing” his son could do.

“As much as I love him …. I want him alive and I would be honored (if he’d turn himself in),” the father said, “so we can go back talking and laughing.”

The elder Sloan said he is going to try and talk to some of his son’s friends to help with the surrender.

Investigators obtained arrest warrants late Wednesday afternoon charging the 22-year-old Sloan with attempted first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

They say the younger Sloan was only able to loose off one shot before another person at the scene knocked the gun from his hand. The victim was treated for a minor injury after being grazed by a bullet.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety show Edward McNair Sloan, who has the nicknames “Loose Screw” and “Chuggy Mack,” was convicted on a felony charge of larceny after breaking and entering in 2016 and initially received a suspended sentence.

That probation was revoked the following year when he was convicted of larceny over $1,000.

He spent eight months behind bars, but was sent back a month after getting out. He was incarcerated for another nine months and was released Aug. 19, records show.

Investigators say the wanted Sloan is considered to be armed and dangerous.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is encouraged to call the department at 910-582-2551 or Richmond County Crime Stoppers at 910-997-5454.
