HAMLET— A mobile home on North Street went up in flames late Saturday night.

The doublewide was fully engulfed when the Hamlet Fire Department was paged out at 9:14 p.m., according to Assistant Chief Richard Lassiter.

The East Rockingham Fire Department was called in for mutual aid and brought a tanker truck. The N.C. Forest Service also responded.

Lassiter said the fire is still under investigation.

ERFD Chief Bill Bayless said his crew responded earlier to a fire at an abandoned home on Mill Road.

Bayless said someone had been squatting in the home and a hole was burned in the floor.

Cordova Fire and Rescue responded to that fire for mutual aid.

The department responded to two vacant home fires on May 24: a mobile home on Sixth Street Saffie, which was a total loss; and a house on School Street, where a pile of trash had been set on fire in the basement.
