EAST ROCKINGHAM – Firefighters from East Rockingham were dispatched at 1:37 a.m. Tuesday morning to a structure fire at 162 Airport Road.
Upon arrival, they discovered that a garage/shop was fully involved at the rear of the property. Even with the quick knockdown by firefighters, the structure and all contents were totaled.

Called in by a gentleman passing by on the highway, he stated that after making the call he thought about those still asleep in the house. After knocking hard on the front door he was able to awake them and help them exit the residence.

With the quick response of the fire department, and the alertness of the caller, only minor damage was sustained to the house and no one in the house was injured.

Deputies from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office were on the scene, as well as mutual aid given by Cordova Fire Rescue. The cause of the fire had not been determined at the time of this article.
