Flash flood watch issued for Richmond County in anticipation of Tropical Storm Elsa

ROCKINGHAM — Richmond County and much of central North Carolina will be under a flash flood watch on Thursday as the remnants of Tropical Storm Elsa head north.

The National Weather Service issued the watch Wednesday afternoon in anticipation of heavy rainfall across the region.

According to the NWS, the heaviest rainfall is expected along the U.S. 1 corridor. Storms associated with the tropical system are forecast to dump 1-3 inches of rain across the region, which could lead to flash flooding. Some rainfall totals may be higher.

Forecasters say tornadoes and wind gusts up to 40 mph are also possible.
