ROCKINGHAM — Nearly all of North Carolina, including Richmond County is under a flash flood watch.

The watch was issued at 2:21 p.m. Wednesday afternoon and is in effect until Thursday evening.

“A Flash Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts,” according to the National Weather Service.

From the NWS:

“Multiple rounds of showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected through Thursday evening. The rainfall will be heavy at times. Storm total rainfall through Thursday evening will average between 2 and 5 inches, with locally higher amounts possible, especially across the Southern Coastal Plain and Sandhills. This heavy rainfall will result in rises on streams and creeks and may result in flash flooding.”

Forecasters also say isolated thunderstorms could be capable of producing damaging wind gusts.

There is also a 60% chance of heavy rain Thursday night into Friday morning with a 30% chance of showers on Friday.
