ROCKINGHAM — Richmond County is under several advisories as another tropical system makes its way toward the coast.
The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued a flood watch effective until 8 a.m Tuesday.
The watch comes as a storm — labeled by the National Hurricane Center as “Potential Tropical Cyclone Eight” — is expected to dump 2-4 inches of rain for areas from west of Interstate 95 toward the eastern edge of the mountains.
Forecasters are calling for 4-8 inches of rain in the southeastern corner of the state, with up to 12 inches possible just west of Wilmington.
There is a 15% chance of flash flooding for most of North Carolina.
There is also a wind advisory in effect until 2 a.m. Tuesday.
Graphics show most of Richmond County has a 10-20% chance of experiencing tropical storm force winds of 39 mph or higher. Sustained winds are forecast to be 15-20 mph with gusts as high as 45 mph.
As of the 11 a.m. update, the storm was 95 miles east of Charleston, South Carolina, moving north-northwest at 5 mph with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph.
The projected path of the storm shows the center is expected to pass through just south of Bennettsville, South Carolina around 8 a.m. Tuesday and hit the Charlotte area by 8 p.m.
The extended forecast shows a chance of showers and storms every other day this week through Friday, before clearing out for the weekend.
