Food Tray Manufacturer Direct Pack Ablaze Following Plastic Fire; No Significant Damage Reported

EAST ROCKINGHAM – Fire personnel was notified at 11:29 p.m. Wednesday night to 612 Airport Road at the location of Direct Pack with possible smoke and fire.

Direct Pack is a company that specializes in thermoformed packaging for food products. It manufactures the trays that restaurants use as take-out boxes. The plastic is recycled in the plant to produce the trays.

On arrival, the first emergency truck discovered smoke and flames from inside the structure. The fire was contained to a small area by the activation of the sprinkler system in the plant. The fire was contained to three pallets that had coarse grains of plastic.

Departments responding were East Rockingham Fire Department, Cordova Fire Rescue and Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

No cause of the fire had been determined at the time of this article. And no significant injuries were reported. Upon the cause of the fire, the RO will issue an update.
