RALEIGH — Marchell Adams-David is moving on up.

Six years after leaving Hamlet, Adams-David has been selected to be next city manager for Raleigh, the News & Observer reports.

Adams-David resigned from the Hamlet city manager position in August 2014, with her last few years being wrought with controversy, to be an assistant city manager in Raleigh.

Before becoming the Hamlet manager, she was an assistant to the city manager, according to Mayor Bill Bayless. In all, she spent around 14 years in Hamlet.

According to the N&O, Adams-David will make history as the first African American woman to hold “the city’s top job.”

She was selected out of 60 applicants, six of whom were interviewed as finalists, according to the N&O.

She will succeed the current city manager, Ruffin Hall, who announced several months ago that he would retire at the end of the year, the N&O reports.

“It is with humility and pride that I accept this challenging position and opportunity of a lifetime,” Adams-David said at a City Council meeting Wednesday, according to the N&O. “I’ve committed my life to serving the community and to public service. And to whom much is given, much is required. I am honored and excited to be leading our Capital City forward into 2021 and many years beyond.”

Adams-David will oversee 7,000 full – and part-time employees in 20 departments and a $1.01 billion budget and make $275,000 per year, the N&O reports.

According to the N&O, Adams-David is a two-time UNC-Chapel Hill grad and served as an adjunct professor for UNC-Pembroke.
