Former N.C. Commerce Sec. John Skvarla dies

Former business executive and N.C. Commerce Secretary John Skvarla passed away Tuesday, July 19. Skvarla also served the state of North Carolina as head of the Department of Environmental Quality under then-Gov. Pat McCrory.

Skvarla served the state and the business community in a variety of leadership roles including Energy Policy Council, NC Works Commission, NC Military Affairs Commission, and the Biotechnology Center Board of Directors.

Most recently he served as senior government relations advisor at Nexsen Pruet, which shared the announcement of his passing on Tuesday and his professional history that includes leading an “environmental mitigation firm, a manufacturer of waste management and recycling systems, one of the largest physical therapy providers in the Southeastern U.S., as well as the world’s largest all-cargo airline.”
