ROCKINGHAM — Richmond County’s giving spirit has continued following the devastating flooding suffered by those in Western North Carolina following Hurricane Helene.
The Richmond Senior High School Class of 1984 decided to make those in the mountains the recipients of its Reunion Service Class Project.
According to Threressa Smith, the classmates were able to donate 23 pairs of work boots “in honor of and memory of the best graduating class ever.”
Smith said the boots were delivered by Max’s Millstone BBQ.
Since the flooding in late September, many in Richmond County stepped up to take supplies to the flood-ravaged west.
Bostick BP and Towing delivered three truck loads in its relief efforts. However, Grace Bostick told the RO this week that “they aren’t really taking anything until spring except labor.”
“They’re so overwhelmed, which is a good thing,” Bostick said.
Our Daily Bread has also sent food to the area, though no local resources were diverted, according to Mari Bennett.
Bennett said four loads have been delivered so far and she is expecting to make another next month.
Warriors in Motion teamed up with Rockingham Speedway to deliver supplies, as did the county government and Board of Education. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Services have even supplied manpower to relief efforts.
This week, Richmond Community College announced that it is collecting items for students at Blue Ridge Community College. Click here to read that story.
