HAMLET — A police officer is being treated for injuries in a Triangle-area hospital following a single-car wreck Tuesday evening.

The unnamed young officer was responding to an emergency call, with the patrol car’s blue lights flashing, around 6 p.m. Feb. 27 when he ran off the road on Hylan Avenue near the intersection with Wallace Street and struck a tree, according to Chief Dennis Brown.

Brown said there were several emergency calls going on around the same time.

The chief said the officer was airlifted to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill where, as of 5 p.m. Wednesday, he was in critical but stable condition.

The officer’s name has not yet been released because Brown wasn’t sure all of the officer’s family had been notified.

The N.C. State Highway Patrol was called in to investigate the wreck. Brown said the Hamlet Police Department is also conducting an internal investigation into the cause of the accident and actions of the officer.

“The family and department appreciates the overwhelming support from the community and other law enforcement partners which has helped the officer in his recovery and the department navigate this distressful time,” Brown said.
