Hamlet Police searching for suspects after officer shot at

HAMLET — Police are currently searching for suspects after an officer was shot at.

Hamlet Police Chief Scott Waters said Patrolman Wilson was conducting a traffic stop on McDonald Avenue earlier tonight.

When the driver of the vehicle pulled into a driveway, Waters said the occupants jumped out and ran.

Wilson started chasing after them but stopped and waited for backup when one of the occupants fired a gun at him, Waters said.

Officers, including a K-9, are searching the area around McDonald and Hylan avenues toward Chalk Road.

Waters said residents in the area were notified by Richmond County Emergency Services.

Police are looking for three black males: one wearing a red shirt and beige pants; another wearing a black shirt and jeans, according to a post on What’s Up Richmond County.

The suspects are considered armed and dangerous.

The RO will continue to follow this developing story.

This is the second time in two years a Hamlet officer has been fired upon.

One officer was shot at five times while at the Hamlet Food Mart in August 2017.
