HAMLET— Investigators are using social media once again to help identify a suspect.

The Hamlet Police Department on Tuesday posted a photo of security footage showing a suspected thief at a local retail store and officers want to know who he is.

The man pictured is accused of stealing clothing and jewelry from the Family Dollar in Hamlet around 11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, according to Detective Capt. Randy Dover.

Anyone who can identify the person of interest is encouraged to call Dover at 910-582-2551.

Dover said using social media has been “very beneficial” with criminal investigations in recent years.

The first time the department used Facebook to ask for help, three of four suspects were identified and arrested by the end of the day, he said.

“It helps a lot,” he added. “Usually when you post a picture, somebody’s going to recognize them.”

Dover said out of all the suspects who have been featured on the department’s Facebook page, only one went unidentified.
