Hamlet Senior Center offering free class for caregivers

HAMLET — One local senior center is offering a free class to help Richmond County residents who take care of their family members or close friends.

The Hamlet Senior Center is teaming up with the Lumber River Council of Governments to make the six-week program available, according to center Director Nikki Sewell.

“Powerful Tools for Caregivers is an educational program designed to help family caregivers take care of themselves while caring for a relative or friend,”  reads a flyer sent out by the center. “You will benefit from this class whether you are helping a parent, spouse, friend, someone who lives at home, in a nursing home, or across the country.”

“A lot of times, caregivers are overwhelmed,” Sewell said Tuesday.

The class will help them learn to recognize stress, find emotional support, and maintain their physical, emotional and mental health by sharing their responsibilities — which could allow them to take a vacation — Sewell added.

The class will meet each Monday from 1-2:30 p.m. Feb. 18-March 25 at the senior center, 102 Lakeside Drive. It will be taught by Rachell Hodnett, family caregiver resource specialist for the LRCOG, and aging specialist Ursula Selles.

Sewell said the class needs at least 10 people to be held. The deadline for registration is Feb. 4. To register, call the senior center at 910-582-7985.
