HAMLET — Personnel policy updates and reappointing personnel to the Housing Authority Board were the lead items on the docket at the monthly meeting of the Hamlet City Council on Tuesday.

City Manager Matthew Christian presented various edits and corrections to the city personnel policy.

“The main edits were to our probationary policy,” said Christian. “It addresses employees serving in an interim capacity. (The changes) address travel reimbursement (traveling on business) a few other minor items.”

Christian also said that they had eliminated all references to the old pay plan as well as a collection of typographical edits that have been in the policy for a number of years.

The policy changes were reviewed by city attorney T.C. Morphis Jr., who said there was nothing “that was really red flagged for me.”

Other changes extended bereavement to three days and an allowance for the transfer of sick leave from previous employers.

“We want to make sure the policy is working for us and for our employees,” said Christian.

Mayor Bill Bayless said he was encouraged by the changes.

“I like the idea in here where you have in the policy that when a person is temporarily put into a higher position than they currently fill, they will get a salary increase for that time,” said Bayless.

Christian said that the city is developing a new social media policy and will be presenting that in an upcoming meeting.

Wanda Auman was reappointed to head the Hamlet Housing Authority Board.

“Wanda has been in place since 2018 and her term was due to expire in August,” said Bayless. “She has done a very good job and we appreciate it.”

Christian and all members of the board praised the turnout of the crowd for the Independence Day celebration. Click here to see the RO’s coverage of the event.

Councilman Eddie Martin reminded the board and attendees about the American Legion Post 49 play-off game on Friday. The team will begin the best-of-five playoffs on Wednesday in Carteret County.

The team will play two games in Morehead City and then return home to play on Friday and Saturday (if necessary).
