Health Department: 110 Richmond County residents have recovered from coronavirus

ROCKINGHAM — The number of COVID-19 cases in Richmond County has surpassed 100, the Health Department reports.

In Thursday’s update, county health officials reported that 110 patients have recovered from the coronavirus. That makes 96 recoveries since the number reported April 30.

The number of new positive cases has also been slowly on the rise, with six reported Thursday for a grand total of 174 since the first case was reported April 7. Eleven people have tested positive since the numbers reported June 1.

There are currently 61 active cases with 57 under home isolation and four hospitalized, according to the Health Department. The county has also received 1,203 negative results since testing began in March.

The number of cases and recoveries by ZIP code are as follows:

  • Rockingham – 112 (68 recovered)
  • Hamlet – 50 (36 recovered)
  • Ellerbe – 10 (5 recovered)
  • Hoffman – 1 (recovered)
  • Mount Gilead – 1

In the map released Thursday, the Health Department issued a note that those living on the outer edges of the county that may have an address in another county count as being in Richmond as long as their home is within the borders.

The number of cases per age group are as follows:

  • 0-18 – 20
  • 19-30 – 27
  • 31-40 – 22
  • 41-50 – 34
  • 50-64 – 45
  • 65-older – 26

The Health Department also released stats showing that females account for 56% of the total cases while males make up 44%.

Case percentage by race are as follows:

  • African American – 45%
  • Caucuasion – 44%
  • Hispaninc – 10%
  • Other – 1%

The county reported its third COVID-related death over the weekend. The first death attributed to COVID-19 was reported on April 10; the second was on April 17.

On Wednesday, the Health Department issued a statement of social media saying: “We are aware that COVID trackers are showing different numbers for our county; however, the Richmond County Health Department has an internal system in place to ensure our counts for Richmond County are accurate.”

For the most part, there have only been slight discrepancies between the county and the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services.

County Health Director Tommy Jarrell previously explained to the RO that some could be because the state pulls its numbers at 5 a.m. while the county waits until afternoon to update.

Another reason could be because some cases have misattributed to Richmond County.

On Thursday, DHHS only showed 171 cases for the county, but in previous days the state’s number was higher. The COVID-19 counter from Johns Hopkins University only shows 170.

For the first time in more than a month, the state actually reported a higher number of cases than the Moore County Health Department. While the county only shows 238 cases, the state reports 241.

Out of 468,302 COVID-19 cases completed statewide, 31,966 have returned positive, according to DHHS.

The total numbers (including recoveries) for other surrounding counties are as follows:

  • Mecklenburg – 4,842
  • Union – 423
  • Anson – 68
  • Stanly – 96
  • Montgomery – 142
  • Hoke – 259
  • Scotland – 89
  • Robeson – 809

As of June 1, DHHS estimates that 18,860 patients in the Tar Heel State have recovered.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control last updated its numbers on June 2, reporting 221 cases in Chesterfield County and 189 in Marlboro County.

Health officials in the Palmetto State estimate there could be hundreds of more people in those counties who are infected but have not yet been tested.
