ROCKINGHAM —Richmond County residents wanting the Pfizer vaccine later this week will have to go somewhere other than the Health Department.

Interim Health Director Cheryl Speight confirmed Wednesday evening that the department ran out of the Pfizer vaccine.

However, she added that there is still plenty of the vaccine manufactured by Moderna. The single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine is no longer available through the Health Department.

She told the RO earlier this month that the Health Department was trying to limit the Pfizer vaccine to those aged 12-17 since it is the only one approved for that age group.

Speight said her department is hoping to pick up more of the Pfizer vaccine on Friday.

The Health Department will be closed Monday in observance of Labor Day and Speight said the Pfizer vaccine should be available again on Tuesday.

The FDA announced Aug. 23 that it had granted approval of the COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by Pfizer and BioNTech, which will now be marketed as Comirnaty, for those 16 or older.

That two-dose vaccine also still has emergency use authorization for 12-15 year olds, and a third dose is available for some immunocompromised individuals, according to the FDA.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine first was granted EUA on Dec. 11, 2020.

In addition to the Health Department, vaccines are also available at FirstHealth Convenient Care in Hamlet, as well as local pharmacies.
