HOT AND COLD: Coffee, slush shops to join cleaning service in Rockingham business incubator

ROCKINGHAM — Several companies are coming to downtown Rockingham, taking up residence in the same building.

The owners of The Speckled Paw Coffee Shop recently announced that they will open a new location in IncSpace, a small business hub at 115 S. Lawrence St. in downtown Rockingham.

Kyle and Myra Poplin founded The Speckled Paw in March 2018 and already have locations in Mount Gilead and Wadesboro.

The Poplins say they focus on three Cs: community, conversation and custom coffee.

The Speckled Paw will be next to Sunset Slush, owned by Ed and Kari Ross, which will sell Classic Italian Ice.

Both businesses will be just outside the old teller area of the former Community One Bank building, which will serve as a common area with tables and chairs.

Kenny Melvin, along with his son, Charlie, and wife, Leah, put in a $53,000 bid for property at a public auction last year and the Rockingham City Council approved the purchase in September 2018.

Kenny and Charlie Melvin are also co-publishers of the Richmond Observer, which moved into the upstairs portion of the building in December.

At Your Service Cleaners, owned by Richmond County native and local realtor Greg McIntyre, opened an office in IncSpace earlier this month.

The company specializes in cleaning commercial buildings such as schools, all office types, churches, banks and various other facilities in Richmond and Moore counties, according to McIntyre, who “jumped at the opportunity” to headquarter the business in his home county.

“We’re excited to have some part in the revitalization of downtown Rockingham,” said Charlie Melvin, owner of IncSpace.

The hub’s walls will also feature work by local artists.
