Howe, Mills file for Rockingham, Hamlet council seats

Political experts say the 2020 election will be competitive.

ROCKINGHAM — Only two candidates filed for the upcoming municipal elections on Monday, however both are new to the political realm.

Bold Moves Dance Company owner Holly Littlefield Howe went to the Richmond County Board of Elections to file for Rockingham City Council.

Howe told the RO on Friday that she had planned to file Monday and that she was running to represent a younger, family oriented demographic on the council.

According to the BOE, Raymond Mills also filed on Monday to run for a seat on the Hamlet City Council.

Filing opened at noon Friday with 10 candidates signing up:

ROCKINGHAM
Mayor
– John Hutchinson
City Council – Bennett Deane, Gene Willard

HAMLET
Mayor
– Bill Bayless
City Council – Maurice Stuart, Abbie Covington, Oscar Sellers

ELLERBE
Mayor – Brenda Capel

DOBBINS HEIGHTS
Mayor
– Antonio Blue
Town Council – Ravonna Magee

All seats for Hoffman and Norman are up for reelection.

The mayoral seats for Rockingham, Hamlet, Ellerbe and Dobbins Heights are also on the line. Dobbins Heights is the only municipality with a four-year term for mayor.

Those who hold council seats for reelection are as follows:

Rockingham – Deane, Willard, Steve Morris
Hamlet – Covington, Stuart, Sellers
Ellerbe – Jeremy McKenzie, John Sears Jr.
Dobbins Heights – Magee, Mary Ann Gibson

In Rockingham, Morris was appointed to fill out the remainder of Hutchinson’s term in 2021, when the latter won the seat against the former.

Filing fees are $10 for races in Rockingham, Hamlet and Ellerbe; and $5 for Dobbins Heights, Hoffman and Norman.

Filing ends at noon July 21.
