Hurricane Dorian strengthens slightly, continues toward Carolinas

Hurricane Dorian could once again become a Category 3 storm as it slowly makes its way to the Carolinas.

According to the 5 p.m. update from the National Hurricane Center, Dorrian had sustained winds at 110 mph with higher gusts. To reach Category 3 status, sustained winds would have to be at least 115 mph.

Forecasters say the storm is expected to strengthen slightly overnight as it moves north toward South Carolina on Thursday, then along the North Carolina Coast overnight into Friday, where it could possibly make landfall.

Counties east of Interstate 95 will see the greatest impact from the storm, though areas further west won’t escape some wind and rain.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 195 miles, according to the NHC.
