ROCKINGHAM — Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey is coming back to Richmond County this week to lead a town hall on fraud.

The purpose of the meeting will be “to address the harmful and growing issue of insurance fraud crime and what the public can do to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves from scams,” according to a press release.

Causey will be joined by representatives of the DOI’s Fraud Control Division, Criminal Investigations Division and the Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program, as well as local law enforcement.

“With scams and frauds taking a greater toll on Americans than ever before, I encourage everyone in the community to attend and learn the ways they can protect themselves from the disastrous effects of scams,” Causey said in the press release.

The meeting is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 11 at Leath Memorial Library in Rockingham, and is free and open to the public.

According to NCDOI, this is the second town hall on fraud and there are more planned across the state later in the year. The first was held in Leland.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office announced an attempted scam on its Facebook page July 5, saying several residents had received phone calls from someone claiming to be a deputy.

The RCSO advised anyone getting such a call to “simply hang up,” and not provide the caller with information.

The sheriff’s office reported similar scams on Nov. 23, April 10, March 30 and Jan. 14 of 2023. In two of those cases, the caller was claiming that the potential victim was being fined for not reporting to jury duty.
