ROCKINGHAM — A sub sandwich chain is coming to the area as part of a trio of businesses in a new small retail center.

C.F. Smith Property Group announced Thursday morning that Jersey Mike’s Subs will be opening Broad Station Commons Development on East Broad Avenue.

Broad Station Commons will be at the site of the former Mi Casita’s Mexican restaurant, between the Chiba Japanese drive-thru, and Dieffenbach G.M. Superstore.

According to the corporate website, Jersey Mike’s first opened in Point Pleasant, New Jersey in 1956 as Mike’s Subs.

CEO Peter Cancro started working at Mike’s at the age of 14 and bought the shop three years later. Soon after, he opened a few other locations and began franchising in 1987 as Jersey Mike’s.

Now, more than 30 years later, there are more than 2,000 locations, according to the website.

Although the Rockingham location is not yet listed, Jersey Mike’s has seven shops “opening soon,” including Whiteville, Cameron and Charlotte.

Jersey Mike’s also opened more than a dozen locations between January and March of 2020.

Last week, C.F. Smith announced the first retail location for Broad Station Commons: Starbucks.

The Seattle, Washington-based coffee company has more than 30,000 shops in 83 markets, according to the corporate website.

A third tenant has yet to be announced.

Construction is expected to begin this spring.

Since early 2020, C.F. Smith has opened several new businesses in nearby Richmond Plaza, including Firehouse Subs, Planet Fitness, Aspen Dental and Burke’s Outlet, the latter of which now occupies part of the retail space left by the corporate closing of J.C. Penney.
