In continuing its exclusive “Raiders Marching Band Member of the Week” feature, the Richmond Observer showcasing two members of the color guard in this edition.
Written by Cleve Baxley, this feature will shadow the Official Richmond County Athlete of the Week.
In its second week, Richmond Raider Marching Band director Mike Ward has chosen Kartiar and Kyia Walker to showcase.
Ward, who noted the two girls’ influence on the Richmond Senior High School program, complimented the Walker’s roles.
“Our past, present and future success with the Raider color guard would not be possible without Kartiar and Kyia Walker,” Ward said.
Class: Senior
Instrument: Kyia plays the flute, while Kartiar plays the euphonium
Years in Marching Band: 5 years; Both say they enjoy winning trophies, participating in competitions, and playing shows on Friday nights at football games.
Extracurricular Activities at RSHS: Kartiar is the basketball team’s manager, a member of the student Senate, and secretary of the Health Occupations Students of America. Both Walkers are members of the National Honor Society, National Beta Club and RSHS’ African American History Club.
Favorite classes at RSHS: Kartiar enjoys marching band, American History, and AP Literature. Kyia, too, enjoys marching band, but also likes biology and chemistry.
Hobbies: Both girls said they enjoy being members of the color guard. They also enjoy music, reading and shopping.
College Aspirations: Both girls are interested in attending college. Possibilities right now are New York University, Coastal Carolina University and North Carolina Central University. Kyia would like to be a medical doctor, while Kartiar wants to be a pediatric doctor.
