WADESBORO — Pee Dee Electric is proud to sponsor two students on the 2020 North Carolina Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. this June. Approximately 45 young leaders from North Carolina will join 1,800 students from across the country for a week of learning about our nation’s history and the importance of civic engagement.

Andrew Chandler, a rising junior at Union Academy in Monroe and Benjamin De Aguilar, also a rising junior from Richmond Senior in Rockingham, will represent Pee Dee Electric on this year’s tour.

With many academic achievements throughout his school career, Andrew is also a varsity baseball player and avid athlete. He also volunteers with different nonprofits in his community and often ushers at his church, GracePointe Baptist, in Marshville. Andrew is the son of Michael and Helen Chandler.

Benjamin DeAguilar is not only a high school soccer player, but is also currently finishing his Eagle Scout Badge. He has volunteered with Richmond County Hospice and also at his church, while holding the title of 4-H teen council president. Benjamin is the son of Arturo and Cristina De Aguilar from Rockingham.

“We are excited to have these two young men represent our cooperative on the Youth Tour this year,” said Seth Allen, Communications Specialist with Pee Dee Electric. “We send the best and the brightest and we think both of these students will gain a lot of insight on this trip.”

Participants will explore some of the capital’s most notable areas, including sightseeing at historic memorials and museums, and cruising on the Potomac River. Andrew, Benjamin and the other North Carolina delegates will also engage in discussions with members of North Carolina’s congressional delegation on Capitol Hill.

Pee Dee Electric has selected local high school students to participate in the annual Youth Tour for over 15 years. More than 50,000 students have participated in the program nationally since it began in 1964.
