Man accused of pointing gun, shooting at Rockingham officers charged with attempted murder, 6 counts of assault with a deadly weapon

ROCKINGHAM — A man accused of pointing and firing a gun at police officers Thursday is facing nine charges related to the incident.

The Rockingham Police Department has charged 35-year-old Reginald Deon Wall with six felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a government official.

Online court records show the charging officers as Andy Ansley, Eddie Grant, Richard Greene, James Hooks, Keeley Sutton and W. Kelly.

Wall is also charged with one felony count each of attempted first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon, as well as a misdemeanor count of going armed to the terror of the people.

According to a press release issued by the department following the incident, a “concerned citizen” had notified police that a man was driving around in a burgundy van, waving a gun out of the window and cursing at people.

Officers reportedly found Wall outside the van near the corner of Randolph and Franklin streets, which is not far from the police station.

Police say they tried to de-escalate the situation, with Wall pointing a gun at them.

Wall reportedly walked into the street and again pointed his gun at officers and loosed off a shot as one officer charged at him to take him down.

A trooper from the N.C. State Highway Patrol was also at the scene, according to police.

No officers were injured in the incident.

Wall was initially booked into the Richmond County Jail on a charge of violating a domestic violence protection order. The charges related to the incident were filed later.

He is being held on a $1 million secured bond for the charges from Thursday and without bond on the protective order violation, jail records show.

“The Rockingham Police Department would like to be clear that the bravery and courage displayed by this Officer very well saved the life of Mr. Wall and quite possibly the lives of other Officers Involved,” Chief Billy Kelly said in the release. “We commend the actions of every Officer involved in this event, for their bravery, and willingness to sacrifice their lives for the safety of this community.”

Wall is scheduled to appear in court July 16 on the charges from Thursday’s incident and Nov. 17 for the DV charge. He also has an Oct. 1 court date in Anson county on traffic violations of speeding and driving with a revoked license.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
