ROCKINGHAM — A man is accused of trying to kill another man following a weekend shooting.
The Rockingham Police Department responded to a call of a shooting around 2:47 p.m. Saturday on Armistead Street, according to an incident report.
The victim is listed as 36-year-old Emerson Cornelius Wall. While no details were included about the victim’s condition, the type of injury is listed as “Other Major.”
The report also lists drug or alcohol use being involved.
Investigators seized three firearms, according to the report: a Jimenez Arms .380-caliber handgun; an RG .22-caliber revolver; and a Jimenez Arms 9mm handgun.
Police arrested 33-year-old Marvin Edward Steele the same day and charged him with attempted first-degree murder.
Jail records show he was also served with a warrant for failing to appear in court on a misdemeanor. He is being held on a combined $52,000 secured bond.
Online records show Steele is scheduled to appear in court July 18 on the attempted murder charge and a misdemeanor charge of simple affray.
In 2004, Steele was convicted on two counts of simple assault or affray and one count of misdemeanor larceny, according to records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction.
He was initially given probation, which was revoked two years later when he was convicted of being drunk and disorderly, landing him behind bars for nearly two months.
Steele was also given probation for convictions of shoplifting (2007), misdemeanor larceny (2009), driving while impaired (2010) and resisting a public officer (2010). His probation on the DWI and resisting convictions was later revoked and he was incarcerated for two months in 2011.
In 2014, he was again convicted of resisting a public officer, as well as aggravated DWI, for which he received a split sentence, resulting in a six-month incarceration.
Steele was convicted of felony breaking and entering in 2015 and had his probation revoked on the DWI. He spent 20 months behind bars.
He went back to prison six months after getting out due to a post-release revocation. Records show he was last released Aug. 11, 2018.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
