ROCKINGHAM — A Burlington man with an outstanding warrant is in jail after reportedly leading Richmond County sheriff’s deputies on a chase late Sunday night.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies had conducted a traffic stop on Mill Road around 10:20 p.m. when 20-year-old Omar Argiel Diaz Corretjer failed to slow down as he drove past.
A deputy followed him and tried to pull him over, but Corretjer kept going, according to the sheriff’s office.
Corretjer led deputies on a chase down Mill Road, on to Hyland Avenue, then to N.C. 177 and Airport Road, turning down Chalk Road and back to Mill, according to the sheriff’s office.
The Hamlet Police Department assisted in the chase as it went through town.
He finally came to a halt after hitting stop sticks and continuing for a short time with four flat tires, according to the sheriff’s office.
Corretjer was arrested and charged with fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle and served with an outstanding warrant out of Alamance County for larceny of a motor vehicle.
The sheriff’s office said there is no indication that the vehicle he was driving Sunday is the same one he is accused of stealing.
He was booked into the Richmond County Jail under a combined $10,000 secured bond ($5,000 for each charge) where he remained Tuesday afternoon.
Corretjer is scheduled to appear in court in Richmond County on Thursday and has an appearance in Alamance County for the vehicle theft charge Sept. 13, according to online court records. He also has court appearance in Alamance County on May 1, 2020 for a misdemeanor charge of simple possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance (marijuana).
Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show Corretjer was given a suspended sentence in 2017 when convicted in Forsyth County on four counts of tampering with a motor vehicle, resisting a public officer and consuming alcohol under the age of 21.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
