ROCKINGHAM — One man is accused of assaulting two law enforcement officers who were trying to arrest him on outstanding warrants.

According to warrants, 26-year-old Darren Lamont Little, of School Street, stole “various items” from the Dollar General on U.S. 1 South on Monday.

Little had also allegedly been told not to enter or remain in the store.

A Rockingham Police Department detective found Little and was attempting to serve him with outstanding warrants when Little allegedly hit the officer in the chin with his elbow and ran away, according to court documents.

Little is also accused of hitting a Richmond County sheriff’s deputy in the chin with his head and refusing to obey the deputy’s commands.

He was arrested and charged with two counts each of assault on a government official and resisting a public officer; and one count each of shoplifting and second-degree trespassing.

Richmond County Jail records show Little is also charged with two counts of failing to appear on a misdemeanor.

He was booked into the Richmond County Jail under a $10,000 secured bond, where he remained Thursday afternoon with an additional $15,000 secured bond on the failure to appear charges. He is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 15.

Online court records show Little has pending charges in Moore County: two counts of misdemeanor larceny and one count of possession of stolen goods or property.

Little is currently serving a 24-month suspended sentence following a November 2018 conviction on five counts of misdemeanor larceny, according to records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction.

His only other prior conviction was for resisting an officer in 2009.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
