Man charged with stealing from car, swinging at deputy

ROCKINGHAM — A man is facing multiple charges after allegedly breaking into a vehicle and having a scuffle during his arrest.

According to arrest warrants, 28-year-old Stephen Gregory Williams broke into a 2012 Chevrolet Impala on Aug. 15.

Williams is accused of stealing a brown and pink camouflage wallet, social security card, two drivers’ licenses and a fishing license, along with two debit cards and a credit card.

When a deputy with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office tried to arrest him later that day, Williams is accused of failing to follow that deputy’s commands, pulling away and swinging his fists at the deputy.

A single suboxone strip was also reportedly found on his person.

Williams is charged with one felony count each of breaking and entering a motor vehicle and financial card theft; and one misdemeanor count each of larceny, resisting a public officer, assault on a government official or employee and simple possession of a Schedule III controlled substance.

He was booked into the Richmond County Jail under a $10,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 27.

Jail records show Williams is also charged with an additional count of financial card theft and obtaining property by false pretenses, and has a $5,000 secured bond for those charges.

The latter two charges did not appear in online court records Thursday afternoon.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show Williams has no previous convictions in the state.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
