Man charged with stealing vehicle from Hamlet dealership

Police say the man shown in surveillence video is Aaron Michael Dohgn (or Dohogn). He is accused of stealing a vehicle from Griffin Chrysler Jeep Dodge in the early morning hours of June 23.

HAMLET — A man accused of stealing a vehicle from a Richmond County auto dealership was caught in Cumberland County — with a different stolen vehicle.

Police have charged 37-year-old Aaron Michael Dohgn (records show is last name also spelled “Dohogn”) with larceny of a motor vehicle for allegedly stealing a Nissan Rogue from Griffin Chrysler Jeep Dodge in the early morning hours of June 23, according to Capt. Randy Dover.

Dohgn reportedly first broke into a Nissan Frontier at the lot before getting out and entering the Rogue, police told the RO late last month when surveillance video was posted to the Hamlet Police Department’s Facebook page.

He then drove the Rouge across the parking lot, got out and broke into and took items from three vehicles — a Dodge Charger, a Dodge Ram pickup and a Jeep Commander — before leaving the dealership in the stolen SUV, according to investigators.

Dover told the RO on Monday that the Rogue was found by the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office on June 30 at the site of a reported breaking and entering that was in progress.

Dohgn eluded capture and allegedly stole another vehicle from a nearby home and was caught in the Fayetteville area by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, Dover said.

The only charges that appeared on the N.C. Court System website late Tuesday was a possession of stolen motor vehicle charge in Cumberland County.

Although a search for his name with the Cumberland County Detention Center produced a negative result, jail officials confirmed late Monday night that he was still there, under a $1,500 secured bond on the Cumberland County charge. The detention center would not release his mugshot.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety, which list his last name as “Dohogn,” show only two convictions — possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance and larceny, both misdemeanors in Scotland County.

However, police say he has had more priors and has more pending charges in other counties.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
